Haileybury students have finished the year in style with outstanding academic results, great respect shown for each other and their teachers and school, wonderful musical performances at the Celebrations of Excellence events, wonderful sporting participation and achievements and, importantly, they seemed to have a lot of fun.

I have attended the six Celebration of Excellence events (the events formally known as Speech Nights) for our Melbourne campuses and Haileybury Rendall School (HRS) in Darwin. Thank you to all families who have attended. The commitment by Haileybury staff to One Haileybury and the focus on the primary magenta principle of ‘Every student matters every day’ have been strongly evident.
These events celebrate the breadth of student achievement but of course there is a focus on the core of a Haileybury education — strong academic outcomes through focused programs.
The highlights of these were:
All Haileybury ELC centres have attained the highest possible rating, including for the education programs, on the national assessment rating system.
Haileybury was the number one ranked primary school in Victoria for literacy and numeracy based on national testing results (NAPLAN).
HRS was the number one performing primary school in the Northern Territory.
Haileybury was in the top four open-entry secondary schools in Victoria for literacy and numeracy based on national testing.
52% of VCE graduates attained an ATAR of 90+ placing them in the top 10% in Australia. Importantly, 96% of Haileybury graduates gained an ATAR that placed them in the top 40% in Australia. With 500 graduates this is an outstanding reflection of our commitment to every student. We work to improve our education outcomes by lifting every student up to be the best they can be.
Haileybury was in the top ten performing schools in Victoria by any/all of the different measures used from the VCE results (ATAR 90+, Percentage of Study Scores over 40, Median ATAR or Median Study Score).
HRS graduated a record 13 Indigenous students as a part of its cohort of 45 this year.
At HRS an excellent 26% of ATARs were at 90+.
At HRS the top Indigenous graduate gained an ATAR of 96.
These academic results were on top of the wonderful breadth of sport, music, drama, creative arts and enterprise and entrepreneurship activities that the students enjoyed.
Of course, these great outcomes were because of the wonderful collaboration between the outstanding teaching staff of Haileybury, the students and families. I thank you all for your commitment to providing the very best possible education for the students of Haileybury in 2024.

Class of 2024 VCE results
Haileybury’s class of 2024 have accomplished another set of impressive and well-deserved VCE results.
For six Haileybury students, their hard work and determination earned them a perfect ATAR of 99.95 – the highest possible Australian Tertiary Admissions Ranking (ATAR) score. This is one of the highest number of students to achieve 99.95 in Haileybury’s history.

Adding to this success, 10% of students have attained an ATAR of 99 and above, placing them in the top 1% of students in Australia, while 36% of students attained an ATAR of 95 and above. This places them in the top 5% of students in the country.
More than half (52%) of Haileybury students achieved an ATAR of 90 and above, which places them in the top 10% of students in Australia —54% of Haileybury Girls College students and 50% of Haileybury College students received an ATAR of 90 or above.
We are also delighted that 33 students received a maximum Study Score of 50 across 12 subjects. Those students have excelled in subjects ranging from English, Legal Studies, Mathematical Methods and Psychology to Specialist Mathematics, Accounting, Sociology and Australian History.
This year, the combined median ATAR for Haileybury was 91.
Setting another Haileybury record, this year’s VCE graduates also included nine sets of twins.

Derek also praised the expertise, commitment and efforts of Haileybury teachers and staff who supported the Year 12 students through the complexities and challenges of VCE.

He also acknowledged the Haileybury families and the strong partnership between students, parents, guardians and the school.

Haileybury Theatre Program recognised at Lyrebirds and Guilds
On 8 December 2024, during the ceremony for the Youth Lyrebird Awards at Bunjil Place, Haileybury was recognised throughout the event for our great year of theatre. This recognition is a celebration of the time, dedication and creativity the students and staff bring to the shows. We could not be prouder of what we have achieved together. Over 130 students gave their time and energy to these works and thousands of audience members came out to watch.

2024 Haileybury Dance Gala
On Wednesday 13 November, 230 Prep to Grade 6 students from all four of Haileybury’s Melbourne campuses participated in the 2024 Haileybury Dance Gala.
The end of year Dance Gala is always a memorable and special event on our school calendar and a chance to celebrate our after-school dance students and their fabulous work throughout the year.
The students worked tirelessly on multiple items for the Dance Gala evening which explored various dance genres such as jazz, hip hop, lyrical and theatrical. The night was colourful, energetic and fun filled. All students had a wonderful time, beaming with pride as they came off stage. Congratulations to all students who were involved and thank you to all parents and friends who came along to support the event
The coordination of such a large program, which runs across four, campuses can be tricky, but the success is largely due to the hard work, time and efforts of our fabulous campus coordinators and coaches. These members of staff and past Haileybury students are very much invested in their classes and students and do an enormous amount of work each week to ensure the very best outcomes. Their dedication, time and effort are greatly appreciated.

A year in review
2024 has been a particularly successful year for the instrumental music department. I trust the year has been a rewarding experience for all students and parents who made the commitment to join our collective journey of creative endeavour.
Haileybury can now boast that over 1,200 students are set to receive a weekly instrumental music lesson in 2025. In the last month alone more than 80 families have enrolled for lessons beginning next year. As available places within the program are filling fast, with several instruments already having waitlists, I would encourage families hoping to secure a place for 2025 to please explore the Instrumental Music Handbook as soon as possible.
As 2024 ends, the music culture at every campus sees more than one in four students carry a musical instrument to and from school throughout the week. Music does indeed play a high-profile role in school life at Haileybury.
For Senior School, 2024 highlights worthy of particular praise include – Twilight Concert, Aria Night, Annual Concert, Jazz Nights, Chamber in the Chapel, and most recently, outstanding performances at the Senior School Celebration of Excellence held last Wednesday night.
For Middle School, the Term 2 concert series was simply outstanding. Audience attendance numbers were large, and all students did themselves proud. Similarly, in Year 5, the recent Band Program ‘5 note’ concert series was a resounding success with students collectively sharing their newly developed skills to appreciative parents.
At the Junior School, the Year 2 String Concert and Scrolls Concert demonstrated what can be achieved when an outstanding string department is combined with an abundance of junior school enthusiasm.
The department’s final performance event for 2024, Haileybury Carols, was held on Thursday evening at St Paul’s Cathedral in the heart of Melbourne. It was wonderful to see so many families celebrate the season of Christmas together in a culturally diverse end to the school year.

Looking to the future of visual arts at Haileybury: 2025 and beyond
As 2024 draws to a close, we are filled with pride for the accomplishments of our students and excitement for the future of the visual arts at Haileybury. The coming year promises to be transformative for our department, with new opportunities for creative exploration, collaboration and celebration of the visual arts across our community.
A new era for the visual arts at Keysborough
One of the most eagerly anticipated developments is the opening of the brand-new visual arts building at the Keysborough campus from Term 1, 2025. This stunning facility will serve as the beating heart of creativity on campus, housing our Art Making and Exhibiting, Media, and Visual Communication Design programs, replete with industry-inspired tools such as the spray booth and laser cutter. Families can look forward to a state-of-the-art gallery space adjacent to Wings Café, offering a dynamic venue to showcase student talent and professional exhibitions alike.
The Visual Arts captains and cross-campus student committee will play a pivotal role in bringing this space to life, curating exhibitions, leading workshops and creating content for the new LED screen overlooking the quad. This screen and exhibiting space will be a vibrant portal to the arts, providing our entire school community, from ELC to Senior School, Melbourne to Pangea, Darwin and China, with inspiration, information and a window into the creative process.
Artist –in Residence program
In 2025, we will continue our exciting Artist in Residence programs, inviting renowned local artists to collaborate with our students. These residencies provide unparalleled opportunities for students to learn directly from practicing professionals, explore new techniques and deepen their understanding of the contemporary art world.
Encore of Excellence
We are thrilled to announce once more, the upcoming Encore of Excellence occurring on Monday 10 February — a celebration of our outstanding 2024 folio students alongside the Music, Dance and Performing Arts students. This event will showcase incredible works from Product Design Technology, Art Making and Exhibiting, Media, and Visual Communication Design. The event will be a testament to the innovation, effort and passion our students pour into their creative pursuits, offering an inspiring start to the year for all who attend.
Engaging with the Arts
Throughout 2025, we will continue to provide students with opportunities to engage with the arts. From student-led exhibitions and workshops to excursions to Melbourne’s world-leading cultural institutions, and ongoing access to competitions and external opportunities, the Visual Arts department is committed to making creativity and culture accessible to everyone. As we look to the future, we remain dedicated to nurturing the next generation of artists, designers and creators.

The Pipes & Drums have been busy this month with performances across all campuses; the Remembrance Day Services, Celebration of Excellence evenings, Graduations and the Pipes & Drums Christmas Party have been the highlights for November.
As the Pipes & Drums finish up for 2024, the staff and students are eagerly awaiting our annual Band Camp scheduled in January, which begins our preparations for the 2025 Pipes & Drums competition season.
We look forward to another successful competition season with many students joining the competition band ranks for the very first time.

Lunar New Year
In 2025, Lunar New Year falls on our first day of the school year and we are looking at bringing good luck and happiness to our campus and celebrating with a lion dance that will be performed for the community.
Welcome to Country
In the first week of Term 1, 2025, we will also welcome Uncle Jaeden Williams to Castlefield. Jaeden is a proud Yalukit Willam man of the Boonwurrung People. As we start the school year, we will celebrate with Jaeden and members of his community as they share stories about our land and perform a Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony.

Our wonderful community of students, staff and parents have contributed to a brilliant 2024 at Castlefield. I thank our students for how they have cared, learnt, played, been empowered, tried hard and were kind. Not just a performance, but a beautiful celebration of all the growth, hard work and joy the children have experienced this year.
We felt very proud of the children as they danced and sang on stage. We saw their confidence and personalities shine.
Class parties provided a fun time for the ELC to come together and for the children to share their learning over the year with their families.
Learning journals
The learning journals acknowledge each child’s achievements throughout the year and all the beautiful learning that has occurred.
The journals have taken considerable time and effort from the teaching teams and represent our commitment to your child’s learning, development and wellbeing.
Not only are these a lovely keepsake, but they also act as a report to share with your family and future educators. It is very special that the children can relate to the learning journals and talk through their own learning, demonstrating their connection and sense of belonging to the ELC.
We trust you will enjoy sharing this journal with your child and revisiting fond memories throughout the year.
Sense of belonging for the new year
As the new year creeps towards us we are excitedly planning for our 2025 families to come together and for our children’s learning journey to begin. Term one brings planned events such as participating in the school’s Welcome to Country, a lion dance for Chinese New Year, an ELC coffee morning, storytelling with Uncle Jaeden Williams and a hands-on experience where the children discover how plastic can be reused.
Junior School
Memories made
The final few weeks of term were very busy for the Junior School. We had our Year 2 Strings Recital held at Aikman Hall, the Dance Gala, Year 3 Werribee Zoo excursion, Year 4 Beach Day, two athletics carnivals, two swimming carnivals, a Presentation Assembly, the Year 4 Graduation and our end of year concert. Our children were exceptional across all events and these memorable moments made for a great end to the year.
The Strings Recital is the culmination of a year’s work on their chosen instrument in the String Program. Year 2 students have two lessons a week on either a violin, viola, cello or double base and it is a real thrill to see all four Melbourne campuses on stage together to perform.
Mrs Cassandra Sinclair worked tirelessly to bring the Year 4 Beach Day to life with the assistance of staff and the Aspendale Life Saving Club. Students participated in myriad of different games and activities on beautiful Aspendale beach.
Year 4 Graduation is always a special occasion and marks the transition from Junior School to Middle School. The change is signified by removing their beret or magenta cap before crossing the Junior School bridge, leaving their current teacher and heading towards their new Head of Middle School in a moving assembly.
Our end of year concert was a Disney extravaganza. Mrs Tracey Jacob led the children in song and dance as a wonderful celebration of a great year.

As we reflect on the amazing year it has been in Middle School at Castlefield, we celebrate and appreciate all the events, activities, opportunities, experiential learning and inside and outside the classroom experiences we have had. All of these moments in time culminate in learning, happiness, improvement and development and we are so proud of our students to living up to our Middle School mantra; Try new things, work hard and be kind.
As we look towards 2025, we are already excited to welcome back our students on Wednesday, 29 January as we begin the first school week featuring two Induction Days when students will acquaint themselves with life in the Middle School including a Welcome to Country Ceremony and a Chinese lion dance in celebration of Chinese New Year. All of our camps head off domestically, interstate and even overseas (if you count Phillip Island as overseas) as our students get to embrace our outdoor education programs, create, foster and develop new friendships with their peers.

Over the last couple of weeks, Bayley Misfud has worked with a group of Year 8 2025 students to workshop ideas for a mural to adorn a blank white wall in GMS. At the workshop, Bayley shared her story and connection to country with the students. All the students were invited to paint their ideas of Haileybury and their connection to the land. Many of the ideas came together to inspire Bayley and the concept for the mural was born. The mural starts with our 17 students and five teachers from the original Haileybury school and then journeys towards our current model of girls and boys learning together. The final part of the mural shows the continuing journey as we navigate the next steps towards reconciliation. The image also pays homage to the country we care, learn and play on, with the bay featuring prominently. This is an original artwork by Bayley Misfud and she has signed it using her Aboriginal name Merindah-Gunya.

Recognising academic achievement and accomplishment
Our Junior School Awards and Presentation Assembly was a wonderful celebration of the Junior School’s achievements in 2024. I congratulate all our Academic and Accomplishment Award winners and thank our musicians who entertained us with their performances.
Our Middle School Celebration of Excellence was a glorious event on the banks of the Yarra. As the sun set over the city skyline, we were uplifted by our many musical performances, our young people’s successes and the finale of every student singing the song, ‘Absolutely Everybody.’ Our campus is a special place for us all and as the sun sets on 2024, we think with gratitude of all the great things that we have achieved this year. We have all worked hard and achieved much.
Holiday wishes
I express my gratitude to our City Executive Team for their wonderful leadership and contribution. I sincerely thank our Head of Senior School, Robert Johnson, for his significant contribution to Haileybury for 22 years and City campus for five of those years. Rob moves on to his tree change; he will be missed, and we wish him well.
Finally, I wish you a happy and safe holiday break and I will be out the front of our City campus in 2025 to welcome ‘absolutely everybody.’

Entomologists at Melbourne Museum
ELC children engaged in an educational and memorable excursion to the Melbourne Museum focusing on our interest in insects. The children excitedly boarded the bus observing key landmarks along the way. This was a highlight of our day embedding our knowledge of road safety including how to wear a seatbelt correctly.
At the museum, the children engaged in educational sessions that extended the children’s understanding of life cycles, pollination and seasons. The children experienced hands-on learning and developed observational skills as they walked through the exhibits, understanding key features of insects and exploring their habitats.
This was a wonderful adventure as children continued to develop a lifelong love of learning within the ELC and the wider community.

It was wonderful to celebrate the children’s growth and learning and we thank our families for working in partnership with Haileybury City throughout the year.

In the final week of this term, our current Year 3 students will take part in our City Future Leaders Morning; an event full of opportunities to learn and grow. Guest speakers will share their own leadership journeys, offering insights and advice. For all involved, it is a chance to start thinking about the leadership roles that might suit them best in 2025. It is set to be a thoughtful and inspiring way to wrap up the year.
Goodbye, Year 4 Graduates
As this year draws to a close, it is time to say goodbye to our current Year 4 students as they conclude their Junior School learning journey. Over the past year, they have led our Junior School with pride, showing kindness, respect, honesty, empathy and trust throughout their leadership roles. From tackling challenges in the classroom to excelling in all areas of their learning, they have worked hard to get here. Now, they are ready to take on the exciting journey of Middle School, and we could not be prouder. The upcoming Year 4 Graduation Assembly in Week 10 promises to be a special occasion for all, with many words of wisdom shared by their Year 4 teacher, Ms Bickford, and Heads of School, Ms McNamara and Mr Ritchie.

The 2024 Peace Pole Ceremony at City Campus was a remarkable event, bringing together the Rotary Club of North Melbourne and our school community in a shared commitment to promoting global peace. Held at Haileybury City’s Inside Out courts on Batman Street, the ceremony showcased our iconic Peace Pole, a symbol of unity and hope. Year 3 students took centre stage, each delivering a moving statement about the significance of peace. Their dedication was evident — they had spent weeks rehearsing and refining their words to make this moment unforgettable.

Each year, Haileybury’s Year 8 students work on a business idea they have created from scratch as part of the School’s much loved Startup program. At the end of the year, the best business idea from each campus, chosen by students, competes in the Startup Pitch Showcase.
There were many creative ideas and impressive pitches at City this year — the students should be proud of their dedication and blue sky thinking. After careful consideration, the City Startup Best Pitch Winners for 2024 were Nate, Alex and Leo with Foodie! The proposed Foodie! app looks to address food wastage through people being able to use their phone to either detail or photograph the items they have in their cupboards and fridges and then the app will provide them with recipes so they can use what they have to make meals. The students were lauded for their innovation and forward thinking.
This team went on to represent City at Aikman Hall at the Startup Pitch Showcase where they presented their idea to a panel of judges, and they won. The students’ prize was $1,000 in seed funding and the right to represent Haileybury at the Wade Institute of Entrepreneurship Interschool Pitch event. As expected, the level of competition was extremely high, but the students were able to claim victory.
The School is immensely proud that this is the third time in four years we have been successful when pitching at the Wade Institute. We congratulate Leo, Alex and Nate on their superb efforts.
City Art Show 2024
Haileybury City recently showcased the artistic talent of its students during the 2024 Art Show, featuring works from students across the ELC, Junior, Middle and Senior Schools. This annual event celebrated the diverse creative expressions of City’s students, with each display reflecting the unique perspective and skill of its creator.
Haileybury City’s Ground Floor Assembly area was transformed into a dedicated exhibition space, displaying works that spanned multiple mediums including painting, sculpture, digital art and mixed media. From the imaginative and playful pieces of the ELC children, to the more refined, conceptual artworks of Senior School students, the event demonstrated the breadth of artistic exploration that Haileybury City nurtures across all year groups.
The Junior School’s contribution was marked by colourful, dynamic artworks that reflected students’ growing technical skills and creative curiosity, while works from the Middle School took on a more sophisticated form, with many students exploring deeper themes such as identity, the environment and emotional expression. Senior School students pushed boundaries with more conceptual and personal pieces, challenging viewers to reflect on contemporary issues through art.
The event was not only a celebration of artistic talent, but also a reflection of Haileybury City’s commitment to developing the whole student. The event featured the musical talents of the Prep and Year 1 choir and various vocal performances from the Junior and Middle Schools, and the crowd was transported to another world during the Narnia flash-mob experience.
With an encouraging and supportive environment, students at Haileybury City were given the opportunity to explore their creative potential and share their work with the wider school community. The Art Show also provided a platform for families, friends and staff to come together in celebration of the students’ hard work and dedication throughout the year. It was an exciting end to a year of artistic growth and achievement, and a reminder of the power of creativity in bringing people together.

We had a great turn out of members for our AGM held on 19 November via Zoom. The AGM is a time to celebrate the wonderful year that we have had and welcome new members to HPF City. We would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to the outgoing HPF City Executive and social representatives for their dedication and efforts, and warmly welcome the incoming team.
As your newly elected co-presidents at the recent HPF City AGM we want to thank you for your support and our appointments. We have both been active contributors to HPF City, holding various positions over the years as social representatives and in executive roles.
Second-hand Uniform Shop (SHUS)
Up Day continues to be our biggest day of the year for uniform donations and purchases. We thank all the families who have contributed items to the shop for sale in such a timely manner. This initiative promotes sustainability, generates funds to support HPF City fundraising efforts and families benefit by receiving funds for their contributed uniforms if elected, creating a win-win for the community.
With the end of the year approaching, this is a perfect time to sort out those outgrown and no longer needed uniform items. You can deliver them to the collection bins for sale at the second-hand uniform shop. To assist families, the bins can be found at City Reception at King Street until Wednesday, 18 December 2024.

2024 year round up
As the year comes to an end, it is the perfect moment to reflect on our achievements, the spirit of giving, and the many opportunities that HPF City has provided to connect us as a community while supporting the students at the City campus. We can proudly say that we have had four sell-out events this year, which reflects the amazing team of volunteers and the community we have at HPF City. A sincere thank you to the parents and friends who have generously contributed, donated and supported HPF City throughout the year. Without the volunteers, donations and attendance at the events that we create, none of these initiatives would be possible.
Our appreciation extends to Caroline Merrick, Rob Johnson and the entire Haileybury staff, whose tireless support has been instrumental in making HPF City events and activities a success. A big thank you to Gabe Di Martino and his team who are behind the set up for each event and do all the heavy lifting. Your help and assistance are very much appreciated.

Celebrating our amazing Year 12 Class of 2024
It has been a highlight to the year to celebrate the achievements and contributions of the Year 12 class of 2024. This year we graduated 56 students from Haileybury Rendall School — our largest cohort ever (and they all tell me the best ever!).
The photo below shows them at the DoubleTree Hilton, Darwin for their final official get together with family, friends and staff. This special event was held on Saturday, 23 October. It included eloquent speeches and toasts from the students, several well-spoken staff moments, videos, awards and the Old Haileybury Association (OHA) gift bag complete with OHA Yeti.
Within the group of students were 15 Indigenous young men and women which is 27% of the year group. A great testimony to student resilience, talent and perseverance and to the school’s claim that we are a Centre for Excellence in Indigenous Education.
We graduated 13 boarders and several of the remote students had been here since Year 7. Included in this group were our first ever international boarders — two from China and one from Vietnam.
10 of the group had been here since Primary School days with Kormilda and have seen a huge amount of progress and change since they began, whilst 26 of the Class of 2024 joined us in Year 7.
We wish our Year 12s well for the journey ahead, and we know they go into the world beyond School ready to be amazing.

End of Year Celebrations
It is often hard to fathom how fast the school year goes, and whilst the teachers know the children are ready to embark on their next education step, they are always sad to say goodbye.
There is no better way than to finish the year with the ELC End of Year Concert. Throughout Term 4 the children have learnt and practiced many songs that featured on the day. This really highlights how lucky our children are to benefit from Mr Intilangelo’s wealth of knowledge and passion when it comes to music.
Reception and Pre-Prep classes sang four songs each and finished off the concert by coming together for a joyful Christmas medley. Mrs Rawlings presented the Pre-Preps with their graduation certificate as they look forward to Junior School in 2025.
I would like to take this opportunity to say a very big thank you to the ELC staff, students and of course the families for a fantastic 2024. I hope you all have a well-earned and relaxing break spending time with loved ones.

Celebration of Excellence
The Edrington community recently came together to celebrate student achievements in an uplifting evening, filled with invigorating music and awards. The memorable music and singing were quite stunning, with thanks to all our amazing students and teachers. Particular thanks go to Mr Campbell Reither, Head of Middle School Music, for coordinating the musical ensembles, choir and incredible massed singing. The beautiful Edrington video was created again this year by our very skilful Mr Shane Katzer, who we thank most sincerely for his time and creativity. Last Friday, we further acknowledged student achievements at the Semester 2 Academic Award Assembly at which many additional certificates, including Sports, Arts, Science and Maths awards, were received by proud hard-working students. What a remarkable year 2024 has been for Newlands. I have been so deeply impressed by all our students . At Newlands, whilst always working within and dedicated to the Haileybury motto of ‘Every student matters every day,’ this year we have sharpened our focus with a strategy that we have called through the eyes of excellence. It calls all of us to strive for excellence in all areas of our educational experience. At Newlands we aim for growth and improvement not because we have to, but because we can and we should. We challenge the status quo. This year I have had the privilege of witnessing the incredible pursuit of excellence from our staff and students. I will touch on a number of highlights, but as you could imagine, we see excellence in many forms every day at Newlands and it becomes quite the challenge to curate the list.
Academically this year the results at Newlands are of an exceptionally high standard throughout NAPLAN, ICAS and the Australian Mathematics competition that saw 70% of Middle School students receive a credit, 150 students receive a distinction or high distinction and three Newlands students finishing in the top 0.3% to receive an AMC Prize. These outcomes are a reflection of the dedicated students, brilliant teachers and an environment where students are placed at the centre of all that we do.
Early Learning Centre
For the youngest of our Newlands students, our Early Learning Centre has had an extraordinary year as our students and families embarked on the beginning of their journey as a Haileyburian. Inclusion and diversity were celebrated through Diwali, Luna and Harmony Festivals along with Reconciliation Week. They had their first-ever ELC Athletic Carnival where our youngest learners showcased their enthusiasm and budding athletic talents. There was also the Scooter program, visits from the local CFA and Police, and the Haileybury Hives.
Junior School
The Junior School has had a year filled with adventure, curiosity and growth through involvement in Harmony Week and Cultural Dress Day, taking part in Early Bird Reading sessions with the Year 12 students to nurture the love of reading, and the Buddy program further strengthening bonds within our School. We celebrated milestones when the Preps reached their 100 Days of School and a particularly inspiring moment came when Old Haileyburians who competed at the Olympics visited our school to speak about leadership, perfectly aligning with Haileybury’s Respectful Relationships pillars. Another highlight was the Melbourne Stars cricket team clinic, where our young learners not only honed their sporting skills but also learnt about teamwork and resilience from some of the best in the game.
Middle School
The Middle School at Newlands is a place where unforgettable memories are made. This year, our students embraced an incredible variety of experiences that showcased their creativity, passion and love of learning. From the thrill of students versus staff sports games, where friendly rivalry and teamwork brought everyone together, to the joyous celebration of music at the Newlands Music Concert, our middle school students have shone brightly. They have danced their hearts out at the silent disco, shared laughs and friendship at the girls’ movie night, and showcased their theatrical talents in the captivating Puffs production. These events not only highlighted the diverse opportunities available in our Middle School but also reinforced the bonds of friendship and the vibrant sense of belonging that make Newlands so special.

Year Level Representative reflections
At our final Assembly for the year, we invited our Year Level Representatives to share their reflections and highlights from the year. From social clubs to science experiments, students shared their favourite memories and thanked the many staff who contributed to Haileybury Pangea throughout the year, including Mathew Shill, Head of Middle School, who we farewell at the end of this year, and Natasha Eshuis, Head of House (Senior School), who returns from parental leave.
We take this opportunity to acknowledge the incredible work of our very first group of Year Level Representatives. They showed courage, creativity and curiosity as they worked together to shape the culture of Haileybury Pangea.

Term 1A
I would like to thank all Haileybury’s staff and students for the way that they have begun the 2025 academic year. Term 1A is a chance for students to begin their 2025 studies early and become comfortable in their new classes before heading off on an extended summer break. It takes an enormous amount of organisation and effort to ensure that a new school year is ready to go in November of the previous year; however, Haileybury believes that getting a head start on the new year is of great benefit to our students, particularly those undertaking VCE Units 3 and 4 studies.
As the academic year concludes I would like to say sincere thanks to you all for your ongoing support of Haileybury.
My best wishes to you all for a safe and happy time away from the usual school routine.
Celebration of Excellence
Many Haileybury students and families gathered on the evening of Wednesday, 11 December to celebrate another successful year at Haileybury. The night also featured prize giving for our very best sportspeople, performers and academics. The quality of the musical performances on the night were outstanding, bearing testament to the strength of Haileybury’s performing arts program.
Year 10 – Work Experience 2024
Over 450 Year 10 students participated in Work Experience placements during Term 4. Work Experience is the short-term placement of secondary school students with employers to provide insights into industry and the workplace. It provides students with the valuable opportunity to: develop employability skills; explore possible career options; understand employer expectations; and increase their self-understanding, maturity, independence and self-confidence. The skills and insights gained during work experience are invaluable and we are very grateful to the employers who so generously supported our students.
The Haileybury Organ Scholars’ program by Andi - Year 11
As part of the Organ Scholars program at Haileybury, I was lucky enough to travel 17,000km to Haileybury in UK to develop not only my organ playing skills, but to also experience what an international education is like. During my three-week stay at the boarding school, I have played some of the greatest organs in the world — from Waltham Abbey to Southwark Cathedral. The history of English music is vast. As part of my exchange trip, I have also toured prestigious UK educational institutions, such as Cambridge University and King’s College. On a day-to-day basis, I have also attended regular classes such as English, Maths, and Theology/Philosophy, in which I have developed friendships and networked with my peers. Additionally, it was an enjoyable challenge to accompany the school in morning Chapel services by playing hymns, as well as singing in the choir during the festive season. All in all, my time in the UK as an Organ Scholar has expanded my horizons, both musically and academically.

2025 Senior School sport expectations
The sport program at Haileybury is an integral component in developing the well-rounded Haileyburian. Team success is dependent on all students attending Tuesday training and Saturday competition. As such, all students are expected to train on Tuesday afternoons during sport time.
It is a condition of enrolment in the Senior School that all students participate in compulsory Saturday competition. Should there be a valid and genuine reason for being unavailable, then notification (as with all absences) must be verified by a parent and is expected to be received well in advance. On the very rare occasions that a student becomes ill on a Friday night or Saturday morning then parents need to communicate this message to their child’s coach via email and follow up with a medical certificate emailed to the relevant Head of Sport. Coaches’ emails are available at the top of your child’s team sheet. Please do not use the Haileybury app to record Saturday sport absences.
Students who are not fulfilling their sporting obligation due to unapproved absences will be followed up by the Heads of Sport and Head of Senior School.
To reiterate our school policy, should your child need to leave school for an appointment, missing Tuesday sport training, a medical certificate will need to be emailed to the Heads of Boys and Girls Sport the following day. Haileybury asks that students and parents avoid making appointments on Tuesday afternoons during sport training. Parents of students who are at school and unable to train must contact the School (prior to training commencing) explaining the circumstances.

Throughout the course of a year, we do a great job of recognising the outstanding achievements of Haileybury students in sport; not only in APS and AGSV First competitions, but also at national and international events and tournaments. Just as important though, is the vast majority of students who go out each week and do their best at all levels — those Hearts and Bloods that have worn the badge with pride and passionately contributed to team success (and sometimes failure), whilst always having fun with existing and new friends from across our Haileybury campuses.
I would like to take this opportunity to celebrate some of those students who reflect the essence of sport at Haileybury:
Alan (Year 12) – Throughout his time at Haileybury, Alan has been a dedicated member of the athletics program, driven by his goal to represent the school in the Open 4x100m relay at APS Athletics Day. Over the past few years, he has competed in two relays and the discus, showcasing his passion for the sport and unwavering support for his teammates’ success on the big stage. This year, through persistence and consistent training, Alan earned his spot in the 4x100m Open relay team during the final practice meet and proudly competed on APS Day. His enthusiasm and team spirit were infectious, inspiring his teammates and contributing to Haileybury’s success.
In late November, the following Year 12 students were awarded Senior School Sport Service Colours. Not necessarily related to First team selection, these students have represented Haileybury with passion and desire across six consecutive seasons of APS competition, exhibiting outstanding commitment to the Haileybury sports program. We would like to thank Angelia, Sasha, Hannah, Sarah, Amelie, Ollie, Max, Hamish, Harry, Freddy, Astin, Joshua, Leon, Senon, Jack, Oliver, Gabriel and Julian.
A call-out to the girls from Years 7 and 8 who played in the Open 3rd XI cricket team, all participating in cricket for the first time. They trained hard in the nets each Tuesday afternoon and then applied their learnings on match day, with each of them experiencing the joy of taking their first wicket and the buzz of bat on ball for the first time. Well done, girls.
Athlete of the Week awards at Castlefield – we would like to congratulate students from Years 5 and 6 at Castlefield, who each received Athlete of the Week awards throughout 2024. These awards are voted for by their peers and recognise a student’s contribution as a teammate, more so than their individual performances. Teammates who were fun to play with, those who supported their teammates to get better and who played the game in the right spirit were all acknowledged for their most important contributions. Congratulations to all of you on your awards.
On a personal note, I want to thank all those parents and carers who each weekend set the alarm, brave the Melbourne elements and fight the weekend traffic in order to get your little Stars out on the pitch or the stage, in the pool or to the track. I love the way you passionately support them to perform at their best and hope you get as much joy from the Haileybury sports program as I have over my short time here. Merry Christmas to all, wishing you a safe holiday period and looking forward to seeing you in 2025.

Haileybury students have finished the year in style with outstanding academic results, great respect shown for each other and their teachers and school, wonderful musical performances at the Celebration of Excellence events, wonderful sporting participation and achievements and, importantly, they seemed to have a lot of fun.
I have attended the six Celebration of Excellence events (the events formally known as Speech Nights) for our Melbourne campuses and Haileybury Rendall School (HRS) in Darwin. Thank you to all families who have attended. The commitment by Haileybury staff to One Haileybury and the focus on the primary magenta principle of ‘Every student matters every day’ have been strongly evident.
These events celebrate the breadth of student achievement but of course there is a focus on the core of a Haileybury education — strong academic outcomes through focused programs.
The highlights of these were:
All Haileybury ELC centres have attained the highest possible rating, including for the education programs, on the national assessment rating system.
Haileybury was the number one ranked primary school in Victoria for literacy and numeracy based on national testing results (NAPLAN).
HRS was the number one performing primary school in the Northern Territory.
Haileybury was in the top four open-entry secondary schools in Victoria for literacy and numeracy based on national testing.
52% of VCE graduates attained an ATAR of 90+ placing them in the top 10% in Australia. Importantly, 96% of Haileybury graduates gained an ATAR that placed them in the top 40% in Australia. With 500 graduates this is an outstanding reflection of our commitment to every student. We work to improve our education outcomes by lifting every student up to be the best they can be.
Haileybury was in the top ten performing schools in Victoria by any/all of the different measures used from the VCE results (ATAR 90+, Percentage of Study Scores over 40, Median ATAR or Median Study Score).
HRS graduated a record 13 Indigenous students as a part of its cohort of 45 this year.
At HRS an excellent 26% of ATARs were at 90+.
At HRS the top Indigenous graduate gained an ATAR of 96.
These academic results were on top of the wonderful breadth of sport, music, drama, creative arts and enterprise and entrepreneurship activities that the students enjoyed.
Of course, these great outcomes were because of the wonderful collaboration between the outstanding teaching staff of Haileybury, the students and families. I thank you all for your commitment to providing the very best possible education for the students of Haileybury in 2024.

Haileybury’s class of 2024 have accomplished another set of impressive and well-deserved VCE results.
For six Haileybury students, their hard work and determination earned them a perfect ATAR of 99.95 – the highest possible Australian Tertiary Admissions Ranking (ATAR) score. This is one of the highest number of students to achieve 99.95 in Haileybury’s history.

Adding to this success, 10% of students have attained an ATAR of 99 and above, placing them in the top 1% of students in Australia, while 36% of students attained an ATAR of 95 and above. This places them in the top 5% of students in the country.
More than half (52%) of Haileybury students achieved an ATAR of 90 and above, which places them in the top 10% of students in Australia —54% of Haileybury Girls College students and 50% of Haileybury College students received an ATAR of 90 or above.
We are also delighted that 33 students received a maximum Study Score of 50 across 12 subjects. Those students have excelled in subjects ranging from English, Legal Studies, Mathematical Methods and Psychology to Specialist Mathematics, Accounting, Sociology and Australian History.
This year, the combined median ATAR for Haileybury was 91.
Setting another Haileybury record, this year’s VCE graduates also included nine sets of twins.

Haileybury Theatre Program recognised at Lyrebirds and Guilds
On 8 December 2024, during the ceremony for the Youth Lyrebird Awards at Bunjil Place, Haileybury was recognised throughout the event for our great year of theatre. This recognition is a celebration of the time, dedication and creativity the students and staff bring to the shows. We could not be prouder of what we have achieved together. Over 130 students gave their time and energy to these works and thousands of audience members came out to watch.

2024 Haileybury Dance Gala
On Wednesday 13 November, 230 Prep to Grade 6 students from all four of Haileybury’s Melbourne campuses participated in the 2024 Haileybury Dance Gala.
The end of year Dance Gala is always a memorable and special event on our school calendar and a chance to celebrate our after-school dance students and their fabulous work throughout the year.
The students worked tirelessly on multiple items for the Dance Gala evening which explored various dance genres such as jazz, hip hop, lyrical and theatrical. The night was colourful, energetic and fun filled. All students had a wonderful time, beaming with pride as they came off stage. Congratulations to all students who were involved and thank you to all parents and friends who came along to support the event
The coordination of such a large program, which runs across four, campuses can be tricky, but the success is largely due to the hard work, time and efforts of our fabulous campus coordinators and coaches. These members of staff and past Haileybury students are very much invested in their classes and students and do an enormous amount of work each week to ensure the very best outcomes. Their dedication, time and effort are greatly appreciated.

A year in review
2024 has been a particularly successful year for the instrumental music department. I trust the year has been a rewarding experience for all students and parents who made the commitment to join our collective journey of creative endeavour.
Haileybury can now boast that over 1,200 students are set to receive a weekly instrumental music lesson in 2025. In the last month alone more than 80 families have enrolled for lessons beginning next year. As available places within the program are filling fast, with several instruments already having waitlists, I would encourage families hoping to secure a place for 2025 to please explore the Instrumental Music Handbook as soon as possible.
As 2024 ends, the music culture at every campus sees more than one in four students carry a musical instrument to and from school throughout the week. Music does indeed play a high-profile role in school life at Haileybury.
For Senior School, 2024 highlights worthy of particular praise include – Twilight Concert, Aria Night, Annual Concert, Jazz Nights, Chamber in the Chapel, and most recently, outstanding performances at the Senior School Celebration of Excellence held last Wednesday night.
For Middle School, the Term 2 concert series was simply outstanding. Audience attendance numbers were large, and all students did themselves proud. Similarly, in Year 5, the recent Band Program ‘5 note’ concert series was a resounding success with students collectively sharing their newly developed skills to appreciative parents.
At the Junior School, the Year 2 String Concert and Scrolls Concert demonstrated what can be achieved when an outstanding string department is combined with an abundance of junior school enthusiasm.
The department’s final performance event for 2024, Haileybury Carols, was held on Thursday evening at St Paul’s Cathedral in the heart of Melbourne. It was wonderful to see so many families celebrate the season of Christmas together in a culturally diverse end to the school year.

Looking to the future of visual arts at Haileybury: 2025 and beyond
As 2024 draws to a close, we are filled with pride for the accomplishments of our students and excitement for the future of the visual arts at Haileybury. The coming year promises to be transformative for our department, with new opportunities for creative exploration, collaboration and celebration of the visual arts across our community.
A new era for the visual arts at Keysborough
One of the most eagerly anticipated developments is the opening of the brand-new visual arts building at the Keysborough campus from Term 1, 2025. This stunning facility will serve as the beating heart of creativity on campus, housing our Art Making and Exhibiting, Media, and Visual Communication Design programs, replete with industry-inspired tools such as the spray booth and laser cutter. Families can look forward to a state-of-the-art gallery space adjacent to Wings Café, offering a dynamic venue to showcase student talent and professional exhibitions alike.
The Visual Arts captains and cross-campus student committee will play a pivotal role in bringing this space to life, curating exhibitions, leading workshops and creating content for the new LED screen overlooking the quad. This screen and exhibiting space will be a vibrant portal to the arts, providing our entire school community, from ELC to Senior School, Melbourne to Pangea, Darwin and China, with inspiration, information and a window into the creative process.
Artist –in Residence program
In 2025, we will continue our exciting Artist in Residence programs, inviting renowned local artists to collaborate with our students. These residencies provide unparalleled opportunities for students to learn directly from practicing professionals, explore new techniques and deepen their understanding of the contemporary art world.
Encore of Excellence
We are thrilled to announce once more, the upcoming Encore of Excellence occurring on Monday 10 February — a celebration of our outstanding 2024 folio students alongside the Music, Dance and Performing Arts students. This event will showcase incredible works from Product Design Technology, Art Making and Exhibiting, Media, and Visual Communication Design. The event will be a testament to the innovation, effort and passion our students pour into their creative pursuits, offering an inspiring start to the year for all who attend.
Engaging with the Arts
Throughout 2025, we will continue to provide students with opportunities to engage with the arts. From student-led exhibitions and workshops to excursions to Melbourne’s world-leading cultural institutions, and ongoing access to competitions and external opportunities, the Visual Arts department is committed to making creativity and culture accessible to everyone. As we look to the future, we remain dedicated to nurturing the next generation of artists, designers and creators.

The Pipes & Drums have been busy this month with performances across all campuses; the Remembrance Day Services, Celebration of Excellence evenings, Graduations and the Pipes & Drums Christmas Party have been the highlights for November.
As the Pipes & Drums finish up for 2024, the staff and students are eagerly awaiting our annual Band Camp scheduled in January, which begins our preparations for the 2025 Pipes & Drums competition season.
We look forward to another successful competition season with many students joining the competition band ranks for the very first time.

Lunar New Year
In 2025, Lunar New Year falls on our first day of the school year and we are looking at bringing good luck and happiness to our campus and celebrating with a lion dance that will be performed for the community.
Welcome to Country
In the first week of Term 1, 2025, we will also welcome Uncle Jaeden Williams to Castlefield. Jaeden is a proud Yalukit Willam man of the Boonwurrung People. As we start the school year, we will celebrate with Jaeden and members of his community as they share stories about our land and perform a Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony.

Our wonderful community of students, staff and parents have contributed to a brilliant 2024 at Castlefield. I thank our students for how they have cared, learnt, played, been empowered, tried hard and were kind. I appreciate our families for their partnership in creating an environment that sees students thrive, is welcoming, buzzes with laughter and joy, and has that sense of belonging. Our staff are amazing, and we are so grateful for the energy, enthusiasm, expertise and care they bring to their workplace, that ensures every student matters every day.

Not just a performance, but a beautiful celebration of all the growth, hard work and joy the children have experienced this year.
We felt very proud of the children as they danced and sang on stage. We saw their confidence and personalities shine.
Class parties provided a fun time for the ELC to come together and for the children to share their learning over the year with their families.
Learning journals
The learning journals acknowledge each child’s achievements throughout the year and all the beautiful learning that has occurred.
The journals have taken considerable time and effort from the teaching teams and represent our commitment to your child’s learning, development and wellbeing.
Not only are these a lovely keepsake, but they also act as a report to share with your family and future educators. It is very special that the children can relate to the learning journals and talk through their own learning, demonstrating their connection and sense of belonging to the ELC.
We trust you will enjoy sharing this journal with your child and revisiting fond memories throughout the year.
Sense of belonging for the new year
As the new year creeps towards us we are excitedly planning for our 2025 families to come together and for our children’s learning journey to begin. Term one brings planned events such as participating in the school’s Welcome to Country, a lion dance for Chinese New Year, an ELC coffee morning, storytelling with Uncle Jaeden Williams and a hands-on experience where the children discover how plastic can be reused.
Junior School
Memories made
The final few weeks of term were very busy for the Junior School. We had our Year 2 Strings Recital held at Aikman Hall, the Dance Gala, Year 3 Werribee Zoo excursion, Year 4 Beach Day, two athletics carnivals, two swimming carnivals, a Presentation Assembly, the Year 4 Graduation and our end of year concert. Our children were exceptional across all events and these memorable moments made for a great end to the year.
The Strings Recital is the culmination of a year’s work on their chosen instrument in the String Program. Year 2 students have two lessons a week on either a violin, viola, cello or double base and it is a real thrill to see all four Melbourne campuses on stage together to perform.
Mrs Cassandra Sinclair worked tirelessly to bring the Year 4 Beach Day to life with the assistance of staff and the Aspendale Life Saving Club. Students participated in myriad of different games and activities on beautiful Aspendale beach.
Year 4 Graduation is always a special occasion and marks the transition from Junior School to Middle School. The change is signified by removing their beret or magenta cap before crossing the Junior School bridge, leaving their current teacher and heading towards their new Head of Middle School in a moving assembly.
Our end of year concert was a Disney extravaganza. Mrs Tracey Jacob led the children in song and dance as a wonderful celebration of a great year.

As we reflect on the amazing year it has been in Middle School at Castlefield, we celebrate and appreciate all the events, activities, opportunities, experiential learning and inside and outside the classroom experiences we have had. All of these moments in time culminate in learning, happiness, improvement and development and we are so proud of our students to living up to our Middle School mantra; Try new things, work hard and be kind.
As we look towards 2025, we are already excited to welcome back our students on Wednesday, 29 January as we begin the first school week featuring two Induction Days when students will acquaint themselves with life in the Middle School including a Welcome to Country Ceremony and a Chinese lion dance in celebration of Chinese New Year. All of our camps head off domestically, interstate and even overseas (if you count Phillip Island as overseas) as our students get to embrace our outdoor education programs, create, foster and develop new friendships with their peers.

Over the last couple of weeks, Bayley Misfud has worked with a group of Year 8 2025 students to workshop ideas for a mural to adorn a blank white wall in GMS. At the workshop, Bayley shared her story and connection to country with the students. All the students were invited to paint their ideas of Haileybury and their connection to the land. Many of the ideas came together to inspire Bayley and the concept for the mural was born. The mural starts with our 17 students and five teachers from the original Haileybury school and then journeys towards our current model of girls and boys learning together. The final part of the mural shows the continuing journey as we navigate the next steps towards reconciliation. The image also pays homage to the country we care, learn and play on, with the bay featuring prominently. This is an original artwork by Bayley Misfud and she has signed it using her Aboriginal name Merindah-Gunya.

Recognising academic achievement and accomplishment
Our Junior School Awards and Presentation Assembly was a wonderful celebration of the Junior School’s achievements in 2024. I congratulate all our Academic and Accomplishment Award winners and thank our musicians who entertained us with their performances.
Our Middle School Celebration of Excellence was a glorious event on the banks of the Yarra. As the sun set over the city skyline, we were uplifted by our many musical performances, our young people’s successes and the finale of every student singing the song, ‘Absolutely Everybody.’ Our campus is a special place for us all and as the sun sets on 2024, we think with gratitude of all the great things that we have achieved this year. We have all worked hard and achieved much.
Holiday wishes
I express my gratitude to our City Executive Team for their wonderful leadership and contribution. I sincerely thank our Head of Senior School, Robert Johnson, for his significant contribution to Haileybury for 22 years and City campus for five of those years. Rob moves on to his tree change; he will be missed, and we wish him well.
Finally, I wish you a happy and safe holiday break and I will be out the front of our City campus in 2025 to welcome ‘absolutely everybody.’

Entomologists at Melbourne Museum
ELC children engaged in an educational and memorable excursion to the Melbourne Museum focusing on our interest in insects. The children excitedly boarded the bus observing key landmarks along the way. This was a highlight of our day embedding our knowledge of road safety including how to wear a seatbelt correctly.
At the museum, the children engaged in educational sessions that extended the children’s understanding of life cycles, pollination and seasons. The children experienced hands-on learning and developed observational skills as they walked through the exhibits, understanding key features of insects and exploring their habitats.
This was a wonderful adventure as children continued to develop a lifelong love of learning within the ELC and the wider community.

In the final week of this term, our current Year 3 students will take part in our City Future Leaders Morning; an event full of opportunities to learn and grow. Guest speakers will share their own leadership journeys, offering insights and advice. For all involved, it is a chance to start thinking about the leadership roles that might suit them best in 2025. It is set to be a thoughtful and inspiring way to wrap up the year.
Goodbye, Year 4 Graduates
As this year draws to a close, it is time to say goodbye to our current Year 4 students as they conclude their Junior School learning journey. Over the past year, they have led our Junior School with pride, showing kindness, respect, honesty, empathy and trust throughout their leadership roles. From tackling challenges in the classroom to excelling in all areas of their learning, they have worked hard to get here. Now, they are ready to take on the exciting journey of Middle School, and we could not be prouder. The upcoming Year 4 Graduation Assembly in Week 10 promises to be a special occasion for all, with many words of wisdom shared by their Year 4 teacher, Ms Bickford, and Heads of School, Ms McNamara and Mr Ritchie.

The 2024 Peace Pole Ceremony at City Campus was a remarkable event, bringing together the Rotary Club of North Melbourne and our school community in a shared commitment to promoting global peace. Held at Haileybury City’s Inside Out courts on Batman Street, the ceremony showcased our iconic Peace Pole, a symbol of unity and hope. Year 3 students took centre stage, each delivering a moving statement about the significance of peace. Their dedication was evident — they had spent weeks rehearsing and refining their words to make this moment unforgettable.

Startup success
Each year, Haileybury’s Year 8 students work on a business idea they have created from scratch as part of the School’s much loved Startup program. At the end of the year, the best business idea from each campus, chosen by students, competes in the Startup Pitch Showcase.
There were many creative ideas and impressive pitches at City this year — the students should be proud of their dedication and blue sky thinking. After careful consideration, the City Startup Best Pitch Winners for 2024 were Nate, Alex and Leo with Foodie! The proposed Foodie! app looks to address food wastage through people being able to use their phone to either detail or photograph the items they have in their cupboards and fridges and then the app will provide them with recipes so they can use what they have to make meals. The students were lauded for their innovation and forward thinking.
This team went on to represent City at Aikman Hall at the Startup Pitch Showcase where they presented their idea to a panel of judges, and they won. The students’ prize was $1,000 in seed funding and the right to represent Haileybury at the Wade Institute of Entrepreneurship Interschool Pitch event. As expected, the level of competition was extremely high, but the students were able to claim victory.
The School is immensely proud that this is the third time in four years we have been successful when pitching at the Wade Institute. We congratulate Leo, Alex and Nate on their superb efforts.
City Art Show 2024
Haileybury City recently showcased the artistic talent of its students during the 2024 Art Show, featuring works from students across the ELC, Junior, Middle and Senior Schools. This annual event celebrated the diverse creative expressions of City’s students, with each display reflecting the unique perspective and skill of its creator.
Haileybury City’s Ground Floor Assembly area was transformed into a dedicated exhibition space, displaying works that spanned multiple mediums including painting, sculpture, digital art and mixed media. From the imaginative and playful pieces of the ELC children, to the more refined, conceptual artworks of Senior School students, the event demonstrated the breadth of artistic exploration that Haileybury City nurtures across all year groups.
The Junior School’s contribution was marked by colourful, dynamic artworks that reflected students’ growing technical skills and creative curiosity, while works from the Middle School took on a more sophisticated form, with many students exploring deeper themes such as identity, the environment and emotional expression. Senior School students pushed boundaries with more conceptual and personal pieces, challenging viewers to reflect on contemporary issues through art.
The event was not only a celebration of artistic talent, but also a reflection of Haileybury City’s commitment to developing the whole student. The event featured the musical talents of the Prep and Year 1 choir and various vocal performances from the Junior and Middle Schools, and the crowd was transported to another world during the Narnia flash-mob experience.
With an encouraging and supportive environment, students at Haileybury City were given the opportunity to explore their creative potential and share their work with the wider school community. The Art Show also provided a platform for families, friends and staff to come together in celebration of the students’ hard work and dedication throughout the year. It was an exciting end to a year of artistic growth and achievement, and a reminder of the power of creativity in bringing people together.

We had a great turn out of members for our AGM held on 19 November via Zoom. The AGM is a time to celebrate the wonderful year that we have had and welcome new members to HPF City. We would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to the outgoing HPF City Executive and social representatives for their dedication and efforts, and warmly welcome the incoming team.
As your newly elected co-presidents at the recent HPF City AGM we want to thank you for your support and our appointments. We have both been active contributors to HPF City, holding various positions over the years as social representatives and in executive roles.
Second-hand Uniform Shop (SHUS)
Up Day continues to be our biggest day of the year for uniform donations and purchases. We thank all the families who have contributed items to the shop for sale in such a timely manner. This initiative promotes sustainability, generates funds to support HPF City fundraising efforts and families benefit by receiving funds for their contributed uniforms if elected, creating a win-win for the community.
With the end of the year approaching, this is a perfect time to sort out those outgrown and no longer needed uniform items. You can deliver them to the collection bins for sale at the second-hand uniform shop. To assist families, the bins can be found at City Reception at King Street until Wednesday, 18 December 2024.

As the year comes to an end, it is the perfect moment to reflect on our achievements, the spirit of giving, and the many opportunities that HPF City has provided to connect us as a community while supporting the students at the City campus. Celebrating our amazing Year 12 Class of 2024
It has been a highlight to the year to celebrate the achievements and contributions of the Year 12 class of 2024. This year we graduated 56 students from Haileybury Rendall School — our largest cohort ever (and they all tell me the best ever!).
The photo below shows them at the DoubleTree Hilton, Darwin for their final official get together with family, friends and staff. This special event was held on Saturday, 23 October. It included eloquent speeches and toasts from the students, several well-spoken staff moments, videos, awards and the Old Haileybury Association (OHA) gift bag complete with OHA Yeti.
Within the group of students were 15 Indigenous young men and women which is 27% of the year group. A great testimony to student resilience, talent and perseverance and to the school’s claim that we are a Centre for Excellence in Indigenous Education.
We graduated 13 boarders and several of the remote students had been here since Year 7. Included in this group were our first ever international boarders — two from China and one from Vietnam.
10 of the group had been here since Primary School days with Kormilda and have seen a huge amount of progress and change since they began, whilst 26 of the Class of 2024 joined us in Year 7.
We wish our Year 12s well for the journey ahead, and we know they go into the world beyond School ready to be amazing.

End of Year Celebrations
It is often hard to fathom how fast the school year goes, and whilst the teachers know the children are ready to embark on their next education step, they are always sad to say goodbye.
There is no better way than to finish the year with the ELC End of Year Concert. Throughout Term 4 the children have learnt and practiced many songs that featured on the day. This really highlights how lucky our children are to benefit from Mr Intilangelo’s wealth of knowledge and passion when it comes to music.
Reception and Pre-Prep classes sang four songs each and finished off the concert by coming together for a joyful Christmas medley. Mrs Rawlings presented the Pre-Preps with their graduation certificate as they look forward to Junior School in 2025.
I would like to take this opportunity to say a very big thank you to the ELC staff, students and of course the families for a fantastic 2024. I hope you all have a well-earned and relaxing break spending time with loved ones.

There were many different activities and discussions they took part in, and it was terrific to see them rise to the challenges they were presented with. Celebration of Excellence
The Edrington community recently came together to celebrate student achievements in an uplifting evening, filled with invigorating music and awards. The memorable music and singing were quite stunning, with thanks to all our amazing students and teachers. Particular thanks go to Mr Campbell Reither, Head of Middle School Music, for coordinating the musical ensembles, choir and incredible massed singing. The beautiful Edrington video was created again this year by our very skilful Mr Shane Katzer, who we thank most sincerely for his time and creativity. We congratulate all the boys and girls who performed and received awards on the night.
Last Friday, we further acknowledged student achievements at the Semester 2 Academic Award Assembly at which many additional certificates, including Sports, Arts, Science and Maths awards, were received by proud hard-working students. Well done to all our students for applying themselves so well throughout Semester 2. We know you will all be looking forward to the upcoming summer holidays.

What a remarkable year 2024 has been for Newlands. I have been so deeply impressed by all our students . At Newlands, whilst always working within and dedicated to the Haileybury motto of ‘Every student matters every day,’ this year we have sharpened our focus with a strategy that we have called through the eyes of excellence. It calls all of us to strive for excellence in all areas of our educational experience. At Newlands we aim for growth and improvement not because we have to, but because we can and we should. We challenge the status quo. This year I have had the privilege of witnessing the incredible pursuit of excellence from our staff and students. I will touch on a number of highlights, but as you could imagine, we see excellence in many forms every day at Newlands and it becomes quite the challenge to curate the list.
Academically this year the results at Newlands are of an exceptionally high standard throughout NAPLAN, ICAS and the Australian Mathematics competition that saw 70% of Middle School students receive a credit, 150 students receive a distinction or high distinction and three Newlands students finishing in the top 0.3% to receive an AMC Prize. These outcomes are a reflection of the dedicated students, brilliant teachers and an environment where students are placed at the centre of all that we do.
Early Learning Centre
For the youngest of our Newlands students, our Early Learning Centre has had an extraordinary year as our students and families embarked on the beginning of their journey as a Haileyburian. Inclusion and diversity were celebrated through Diwali, Luna and Harmony Festivals along with Reconciliation Week. They had their first-ever ELC Athletic Carnival where our youngest learners showcased their enthusiasm and budding athletic talents. There was also the Scooter program, visits from the local CFA and Police, and the Haileybury Hives.
Junior School
The Junior School has had a year filled with adventure, curiosity and growth through involvement in Harmony Week and Cultural Dress Day, taking part in Early Bird Reading sessions with the Year 12 students to nurture the love of reading, and the Buddy program further strengthening bonds within our School. We celebrated milestones when the Preps reached their 100 Days of School and a particularly inspiring moment came when Old Haileyburians who competed at the Olympics visited our school to speak about leadership, perfectly aligning with Haileybury’s Respectful Relationships pillars. Another highlight was the Melbourne Stars cricket team clinic, where our young learners not only honed their sporting skills but also learnt about teamwork and resilience from some of the best in the game.
Middle School
The Middle School at Newlands is a place where unforgettable memories are made. This year, our students embraced an incredible variety of experiences that showcased their creativity, passion and love of learning. From the thrill of students versus staff sports games, where friendly rivalry and teamwork brought everyone together, to the joyous celebration of music at the Newlands Music Concert, our middle school students have shone brightly. They have danced their hearts out at the silent disco, shared laughs and friendship at the girls’ movie night, and showcased their theatrical talents in the captivating Puffs production. These events not only highlighted the diverse opportunities available in our Middle School but also reinforced the bonds of friendship and the vibrant sense of belonging that make Newlands so special.

As we celebrate excellence, we admire the achievements of all 1,026 Newlands students in 2024. This is just a snapshot of the brilliance we were all fortunate to witness. I look towards 2025 with positivity, knowing this will be another opportunity to celebrate the excellence achieved by all Newlands students.

Year Level Representative reflections
At our final Assembly for the year, we invited our Year Level Representatives to share their reflections and highlights from the year. From social clubs to science experiments, students shared their favourite memories and thanked the many staff who contributed to Haileybury Pangea throughout the year, including Mathew Shill, Head of Middle School, who we farewell at the end of this year, and Natasha Eshuis, Head of House (Senior School), who returns from parental leave.
We take this opportunity to acknowledge the incredible work of our very first group of Year Level Representatives. They showed courage, creativity and curiosity as they worked together to shape the culture of Haileybury Pangea.

Term 1A
I would like to thank all Haileybury’s staff and students for the way that they have begun the 2025 academic year. Term 1A is a chance for students to begin their 2025 studies early and become comfortable in their new classes before heading off on an extended summer break. It takes an enormous amount of organisation and effort to ensure that a new school year is ready to go in November of the previous year; however, Haileybury believes that getting a head start on the new year is of great benefit to our students, particularly those undertaking VCE Units 3 and 4 studies.
As the academic year concludes I would like to say sincere thanks to you all for your ongoing support of Haileybury.
My best wishes to you all for a safe and happy time away from the usual school routine.
Celebration of Excellence
Many Haileybury students and families gathered on the evening of Wednesday, 11 December to celebrate another successful year at Haileybury. The night also featured prize giving for our very best sportspeople, performers and academics. The quality of the musical performances on the night were outstanding, bearing testament to the strength of Haileybury’s performing arts program.
Year 10 – Work Experience 2024
Over 450 Year 10 students participated in Work Experience placements during Term 4. Work Experience is the short-term placement of secondary school students with employers to provide insights into industry and the workplace. It provides students with the valuable opportunity to: develop employability skills; explore possible career options; understand employer expectations; and increase their self-understanding, maturity, independence and self-confidence. The skills and insights gained during work experience are invaluable and we are very grateful to the employers who so generously supported our students.
The Haileybury Organ Scholars’ program by Andi - Year 11
As part of the Organ Scholars program at Haileybury, I was lucky enough to travel 17,000km to Haileybury in UK to develop not only my organ playing skills, but to also experience what an international education is like. During my three-week stay at the boarding school, I have played some of the greatest organs in the world — from Waltham Abbey to Southwark Cathedral. The history of English music is vast. As part of my exchange trip, I have also toured prestigious UK educational institutions, such as Cambridge University and King’s College. On a day-to-day basis, I have also attended regular classes such as English, Maths, and Theology/Philosophy, in which I have developed friendships and networked with my peers. Additionally, it was an enjoyable challenge to accompany the school in morning Chapel services by playing hymns, as well as singing in the choir during the festive season. All in all, my time in the UK as an Organ Scholar has expanded my horizons, both musically and academically.

2025 Senior School sport expectations
The sport program at Haileybury is an integral component in developing the well-rounded Haileyburian. Team success is dependent on all students attending Tuesday training and Saturday competition. As such, all students are expected to train on Tuesday afternoons during sport time.
It is a condition of enrolment in the Senior School that all students participate in compulsory Saturday competition. Should there be a valid and genuine reason for being unavailable, then notification (as with all absences) must be verified by a parent and is expected to be received well in advance. On the very rare occasions that a student becomes ill on a Friday night or Saturday morning then parents need to communicate this message to their child’s coach via email and follow up with a medical certificate emailed to the relevant Head of Sport. Coaches’ emails are available at the top of your child’s team sheet. Please do not use the Haileybury app to record Saturday sport absences.
Students who are not fulfilling their sporting obligation due to unapproved absences will be followed up by the Heads of Sport and Head of Senior School.
To reiterate our school policy, should your child need to leave school for an appointment, missing Tuesday sport training, a medical certificate will need to be emailed to the Heads of Boys and Girls Sport the following day. Haileybury asks that students and parents avoid making appointments on Tuesday afternoons during sport training. Parents of students who are at school and unable to train must contact the School (prior to training commencing) explaining the circumstances.

Throughout the course of a year, we do a great job of recognising the outstanding achievements of Haileybury students in sport; not only in APS and AGSV First competitions, but also at national and international events and tournaments. Just as important though, is the vast majority of students who go out each week and do their best at all levels — those Hearts and Bloods that have worn the badge with pride and passionately contributed to team success (and sometimes failure), whilst always having fun with existing and new friends from across our Haileybury campuses.
I would like to take this opportunity to celebrate some of those students who reflect the essence of sport at Haileybury:
Alan (Year 12) – Throughout his time at Haileybury, Alan has been a dedicated member of the athletics program, driven by his goal to represent the school in the Open 4x100m relay at APS Athletics Day. Over the past few years, he has competed in two relays and the discus, showcasing his passion for the sport and unwavering support for his teammates’ success on the big stage. This year, through persistence and consistent training, Alan earned his spot in the 4x100m Open relay team during the final practice meet and proudly competed on APS Day. His enthusiasm and team spirit were infectious, inspiring his teammates and contributing to Haileybury’s success.
In late November, the following Year 12 students were awarded Senior School Sport Service Colours. Not necessarily related to First team selection, these students have represented Haileybury with passion and desire across six consecutive seasons of APS competition, exhibiting outstanding commitment to the Haileybury sports program. We would like to thank Angelia, Sasha, Hannah, Sarah, Amelie, Ollie, Max, Hamish, Harry, Freddy, Astin, Joshua, Leon, Senon, Jack, Oliver, Gabriel and Julian.
A call-out to the girls from Years 7 and 8 who played in the Open 3rd XI cricket team, all participating in cricket for the first time. They trained hard in the nets each Tuesday afternoon and then applied their learnings on match day, with each of them experiencing the joy of taking their first wicket and the buzz of bat on ball for the first time. Well done, girls.
Athlete of the Week awards at Castlefield – we would like to congratulate students from Years 5 and 6 at Castlefield, who each received Athlete of the Week awards throughout 2024. These awards are voted for by their peers and recognise a student’s contribution as a teammate, more so than their individual performances. Teammates who were fun to play with, those who supported their teammates to get better and who played the game in the right spirit were all acknowledged for their most important contributions. Congratulations to all of you on your awards.
On a personal note, I want to thank all those parents and carers who each weekend set the alarm, brave the Melbourne elements and fight the weekend traffic in order to get your little Stars out on the pitch or the stage, in the pool or to the track. I love the way you passionately support them to perform at their best and hope you get as much joy from the Haileybury sports program as I have over my short time here. Merry Christmas to all, wishing you a safe holiday period and looking forward to seeing you in 2025.
