An exceptional Instrumental Program underpins music at Haileybury

Being an active participant in music is an opportunity offered to every student at Haileybury.

The journey starts with the Year 2 Strings program; all Year 2 students participate in this valuable program, learning a string instrument all year in a group setting. In Year 5, students participate in a semester of the Year 5 Band program, learning in an ensemble setting.

Individual tuition underpins the ensemble program and provides the platform for each student to receive personalised instruction from a specialist in their field of music. Every child’s progress is tailored to their learning style, speed of comprehension and physical development.

Tuition is available for the following instruments: Strings (Double Bass, Cello, Viola & Violin); Piano; Brass (euphonium, horn, trombone, trumpet & tuba); Guitar (classical/acoustic, bass guitar & electric); Percussion (drum kit & percussion); Voice; Woodwind (bassoon, clarinet, flute, oboe & saxophone); and Pipe organ.

The Haileybury Music program is an ensemble-based program. Access to this valuable program is included in the instrumental music tuition charges. Students who learn an instrument outside the School are also welcome to participate in the ensemble program.

In addition to many Haileybury settings, there are opportunities to perform at professional and unique venues such as Melbourne Recital Centre, MEMO Music Hall and St Paul’s Cathedral. They may also participate in Eisteddfods, Bands Festivals, charitable events, assemblies and more.

Each instrument/year level has a core ensemble that includes Haileybury Singers, Contemporary Singers, Chamber Strings, Symphony Orchestra, Concert Band, Wind Symphony, Guitar Ensemble, and many more. Additional opportunities are available for students to join smaller, non-core ensembles, usually by invitation only. These include Jazz Combos, Stage Band, String Orchestra and auditioned choirs.

In addition to the concert calendar, music students also have access to exciting learning experiences throughout the year. These include masterclasses and workshops, Band Camp and Strings Camp, and overseas tours.
