Dance

Providing a solid grounding for creativity development

The Dance Program at Haileybury is vast and varied with students able to participate in dance from Prep through to Year 12 in many different ways. An after school dance program is offered as an optional extra for Prep to Year 6 students across all campuses. Dance classes incorporate a variety of styles depending on the experience and interest of the students. Students build technique whilst having lots of fun and build routines for competition (Grades 5 and 6 students only) and the end of year Dance Gala.

From Year 7 through to Year 12 Dance operates as a sport at Haileybury. Students can elect to participate in Dance as their summer and winter sport and then move through an audition process. If students are successful in obtaining positions on the Middle School or Senior School Dance Squads, they will then be placed in teams based on ability, experience and style. Each team works on building a routine with an experienced coach and choreographer for competition. Teams train each Tuesday during the designated sport training time and again on a Saturday morning.

Haileybury competes in the TFT Dance Star competition which runs between April and August and involves weekend competitions at a Regional, State and National level. The competition encompasses a variety of genres of dance including jazz, hip-hop, contemporary and theatrical. Haileybury has certainly established itself as one of the leading schools within this competition experiencing much success in a range of team and soloist sections.

Students who are passionate and skilled dancers can also elect to study Dance at VCE by completing Units 1 to 4 in Dance. Students study prescribed works by well known choreographers, learn dance works and develop their own solos for assessment as part of this course. Finally, there are many opportunities for students to be involved in Dance at a co-curricular level from Junior School through to Senior School by way of school musicals.

The benefits of being involved in the Haileybury Dance Program are far reaching. Not only does it provide students with incredible performance opportunities and a means to build their skill set and confidence, it also offers a wonderful and supporting community for those students lucky enough to be a part of the program. The staff are all passionate and engaged and our coaches are all old Haileybury students who have successfully been through the program as students.
