Balancing academic focus with personal pursuit
$20 Boss is a free-to-access program that develops students entrepreneurial mindset and financial literacy. Students are provided $20 as startup capital to build a business for good and trade to raise money for a chosen charity. Students learn about basic business principles, financial management, teamwork and the design thinking process. The $20 Boss program is the largest entrepreneurship program in Australia.
Art Works provides a an opportunity for students to be creative and develop their artistic skills. A range of opportunities will be provided throughout the year.
Bayspeak is a Bayside Secondary School public speaking competition being provided by the Brighton Rotary Club, Brighton North and Sandringham. The public speaking program is based on an existing competition called Wynspeak. This program has over 1000 secondary school students from 38 schools represented in the program. Prize money will be awarded to individual winners and runners up in each section. Perpetual trophies will be awarded to schools who win each section.
Modelled on The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, The Compass Award is designed to enhance development of the individual child. Students aged 10-14 years old choose their own challenging activities, learn new skills and in the process, develop initiative and commitment, becoming more responsible and motivated young people. The Compass Award is the chance to gain the benefits of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award at an earlier age.
Students in this select entry program compete in teams of eight across 10 disciplines: engineering, mathematics and chess, code breaking, art and poetry, science, English, ideation, creative producers, cartography and general knowledge.
The Debating Association of Victoria runs state wide debating compeition and Haileybury students compete in the Keysborough and an inner-city region
Do you want to improve your acting skills? Want to hang with other students who love acting just as much as you? Well Drama Club is the place to be seen! Every 2nd Monday lunchtime you’re invited to come along to the Newlands Drama Club. There will be games, workshops and some mystery guests. Can’t wait to see you!
Haileybury provides students with the opportunity to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award. The Award empowers students aged between 14-24 to explore their full potential and find their purpose, passion and place in the world, regardless of their location or circumstance. The Award is a fully inclusive program and has no social, political, or religious affiliations.
Environment/Sustainability/Eco Club aim to inspire, motivate students to participate and take up meaningful environmental activities and projects, which can achieve meaningful change within the school community. It may also allow students to reach out to influence their parents and peers to promote good environmental behaviour in their everyday life.
The Ethics Olympiad provides students with a creative vehicle for developing skills in communication, critical thinking and respectful discourse while dealing with contentious ethical issues. Haileybury invites 5-10 students to participate in the event each year.
Evatt is a Model United Nations Security Council diplomacy competition for students in Years 9-12 and is run by UN Youth Victoria. It aims to educate young people about Australia’s place in the world and empower them as active citizens by developing public speaking, negotiation, teamwork, research, and diplomatic skills. The competition takes the form of a mock session of the UN Security Council. Teams of two students debate, amend, and vote on a prepared resolution from the their assigned nation. The students judged the most effective diplomats proceed to the next round.
Students are introduced to the first few steps of Future Problem Solving.
This select entry program involves problem solving problems of the future by using the six step process. Participation in Future Problem Solving:develops the critical and creative thinking skills necessary to adapt to a changing world, increases awareness of the future, enhances communication & collaboration and utilises an effective creative problem solving model encouraging youth to actively shape their future.
The Game of Loans programs is run through the library at lunchtime. It develops student understanding of finances in a fun and enagaging way.
GIobal Issues is a discussion group that will consider and evaluate the environmental, social, political, economic and cultural issues of our time. The climate emergency, the slow death of neoliberal economics, identity politics, the decline of democracy, the rise of China are all subjects for discussion in GIobal Issues.
Haileybury Hive engages students to learn about beekeeping, the biology and ecology of bees as well as how to use bee products in applications such as candle making and wax wrap making.
The Haileybury Heritage and Archive Club meets regularly in the Jim Brown Centre at Keysborough, where items pertaining to the history of the School are held. The Club is made up of students from Years 10-12 who engage in a variety of activities including listening to guest speakers, participating in research, writing and podcasts and Club functions celebrating important anniversaries. The Heritage and Archive Club is a welcoming and inclusive group and will be expanding its presence beyond the Keysborough campus to Berwick, Brighton and City campuses in 2020.
Haileybury students have the opportunity to train and compete in the annual Legacy Junior Public Speaking Award (LJPSA). This competition aims to enhance the oral communication and public speaking skills of students aged between 12 to 14 years old.
Students in Senior School have the opportunity to join the library committee. The Library Committee works to promote reading and engaging the student community in the library and they arrange a number of competitions and events throughout the year.
Students in taking part in the Writers Workshop Elective are invited to attend the Melbourne Writers Festival. Students interested in this program who are not taking the elective should contact their Head of LEAP.
Within the Middle School Debating Program at Haileybury, Year 5 & 6 students are introduced to the basic core skills of debate and will also have the opportunity to participate in Haileybury internal debating competitions as well as the DAV Primary School Public Speaking Competition:
“The competition aims to give young speakers the opportunity to put their ideas forward in front of an audience whilst expanding their knowledge of current affairs. Students will develop the “building blocks” of public presentation—confidence, clarity, and the development of arguments—which are very important skills both in and out of school.” - DAV Primary School Public Speaking Competition.
Year 7 & 8 students will then expand on these skills to further engage with the DAV’s Junior Secondary Program:
“The Junior Secondary Program (JSP) is an introduction to debating for junior secondary students in years 7 and 8 who have not participated in the DAV Schools Competition. The program is designed to provide training in the basic skills and structure of debating whilst also giving students an opportunity to participate in three 'friendly' inter-school debates.” – DAV Junior Secondary Program.
All year levels will have access to introductory sessions, coaching and demonstrations where their public speaking skills are thereby honed and expanded. Please contact Angelos Mavridis for more information about Middle School Debating at your campus.
Haileybury Model United Nations is an academic extension program that aims to connect and support Year 8 Middle School students throughout their exploration of world issues such as; conflict, consumerism, disaster, and climate change and more.
Mooting is the oral presentation of a legal issue or problem against an opposing counsel and before a judge. It is perhaps the closest experience that a student can have whilst at school to appearing in court. Senior School students participate in the La Trobe University High School Mooting competition in Year 11 and the Bond University Competition in Year 12.
The National History Challenge is a competition that encourages students to explore, research and make deep connections to the past. Students will have the opportunity to research world history, analyse Australia’s past, and investigate their community. The NHC emphasises and rewards quality research, the use of community resources and effective presentation.
OutLoud is a spoken word slam competition where secondary school students compete in teams of up to four. They write, choreograph and perform their original work for a panel of professional judges as part of the Melbourne Writers Festival.
Students who participate in the Philosophon/Philosophy Club are involved in a range of activities. There are speakers, games and Communities of Inquiries. Students develop the ability to construct an argument collaboratively on interesting philosophical and ethical issues.
PESA is a public-speaking competition for students aged 15-18 years run by the VCAA. It provides an excellent opportunity for students to build self-confidence and extend their skills in oral communication, speech writing and research. Haileybury may enter one student from the Boys School and one student from the Girls School. Students may be involved in up to three finals over term 1 and 2, depending on how far they progress in the Competition. These finals run during the school day.
The Premier’s Reading Challenge first began in 2005 and since then more than 2.8 million students have read nearly 48 million books. The Challenge is available to all students at Haileybury and is run through the library. Once students have registered they need to keep a record of their reading on the challenge website. Each year level are given a list of challenge books and they will need to read a certain number by a particular date.
Students are selected to participate in a range of public speaking competitions.
Local Rotary Clubs hold a number of public speaking competitions throughout the year. Expressions of interest are called for from students who wish to participate.
Radio club provides the opportunity for students to develop and broadcast a radio program at Southern FM. Students regularly meet to develop their shows.
Do you need more confidence to speak up? This enjoyable program aims to improve student confidence, public speaking and leadership skills. Students will work with experienced coaches in a supportive environment to reach their personal speaking goals.
Shine Cambodia is a not-for-profit charity and Senior School LEAP Program. Students involved in this program are invited to participate in experiential-service-learning to develop their interest in social justice. Students explore the cause and volunteer time to event-planning and fundraising initiatives.
Tournament of Minds is a a problem-solving programme where students have the opportunity to work in a team to explore and solve demanding, open-ended challenges within the Arts, STEM, Language Literature and Social Sciences.
UN Voice of Youth is a unique public speaking competition for students in Year 7-10. Voice invites you to solve issues that affect your community, nation, and the world. From homelessness to climate change, we want to hear you pitch your big ideas.
The ICAS Assessments series is designed to assess students' ability to apply classroom learning in new contexts, using higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills. Haileybury administers these during the school day with students being invited to attend.
