Welcome from Rhiannon Rowe, Haileybury Head of English (Junior School)

Why take this course

  • Master effective phonics instruction to enhance student literacy and foster a love of learning.
  • Develop and apply systematic synthetic phonics techniques to support diverse learners effectively.
  • Complete mandatory professional development hours through a targeted, high-impact program.

What will you learn?

The difference between synthetic and analytic phonics approaches, appreciating each in literacy instruction.

Pronunciation of all 44 phonemes in the English language, including consonant and vowel sounds, with correct articulation.

Sound-letter correspondences and more complex phonetic elements, including diphthongs, r-controlled vowels, and schwa sounds.

How to create and deliver phonics lessons incorporating blending, segmenting, and syllable-based instruction.

How to address common challenges like difficult graphemes and non-standard sounds.

At Haileybury evidence-based practice is at the core of our commitment to building strong literacy skills. The Victorian government’s decision to mandate systematic synthetic phonics from Prep to Year 2 supports the research: explicit instruction is the most effective way to teach reading.

For nearly two decades, Haileybury has championed explicit teaching through the "I Do, We Do, You Do" model. Students are guided step-by-step to Track, Blend, and Segment sounds. First, the teacher demonstrates, then students practise with support, and finally, they apply the skills independently.

“It’s not just about teaching phonics; it’s about using phonics. We teach students to use letters and sounds from the start, embedding proficiency through daily practice.”
Grenville Green, Haileybury’s Deputy Principal (Junior School)

The success is clear—Haileybury consistently ranks among Australia’s top independent primary schools for NAPLAN results, with Year 3 students reading at a Year 6 level. The same evidence-based programs are used at Haileybury Rendall School in Darwin, driving exceptional literacy outcomes in the Northern Territory.

Now, with the Phonics 101 online professional development course, you can access one of the most important phases of this explicit model. This course provides the Why? What? and How? of phonics instruction, giving you everything you need to elevate literacy teaching in your classroom.

With toolkits, strategies, and real classroom applications, Phonics 101 empowers you to make a lasting impact on your students' literacy journey.
